Our story by Rebecca Williams
Once upon a time (Don’t all stories start this way)…
While living in Las Vegas, on our first Thanksgiving we were married in 2003, I decided that it would be just a great vacation to show Carl everywhere I had lived in Arizona. I am a 3rd generation Arizona native from a pioneer family (yes, they came to AZ in a covered wagon and opened the first General Store in Mesa, AZ called the North Brothers) I knew Carl was going to be just thrilled to hear all my stories. (Ok, he was not)
Globe was our last stop and after 3 days of listening to me go down memory lane, Carl was getting anxious to get home…but I had just one more stop I wanted to make. My friend Nancy Thompson’s house, I knew he would enjoy the views. Although Carl wasn’t excited about the prospect, I asked him for just 10 more minutes. Since I was driving, Carl didn’t have a choice, I whipped him up the hill. Carl looked around for those 10 minutes, saw the magnificent views and said, “Let’s buy it!” and I said, “Get in the car and let’s go home!” I obviously lost that argument…
The home was originally built by the Day family in 1968. It was a Grand Estate and the talk of the town. The Thompson family bought the house in the 1970’s and raised their two children there. We are the proud third owners. We purchased #1 Dream Manor Drive in February of 2005. We intended the home be our weekend retreat and vacation home… and perhaps someday we would retire here someday.
Carl a former realtor/contractor began construction immediately. His dream was to give the 1960’s ranch style home a 2005 Tuscan update. He and his youngest son Curtis began with the rebuild of the guest house that had burned down in the 1970’s. Having no original plans to start from, Carl rebuilt the guest house (now called Guest House A and B). He added a 4 story bell tower to stargaze from. The plan was Curtis would eventually live in the guest house and we would visit and eventually live in the main manor house.
By May of 2005, Carl was spending most of his time at Dream Manor versus Vegas and encouraged me to move-I wasn’t too excited about it until, the company I worked for (MICROS Systems, Inc) allowed me to take a different position to work from home.
Son, Curtis was the catalyst that changed our home into a business. After we had made the decision to relocate, Curtis ended up with an ex-girlfriend from Vegas who moved him back to Vegas. So here we were stuck with all of this real estate, and Carl came up with the idea to transform the property into an Inn. With the address in mind, we decided it had already been named: Dream Manor Inn
In July of 2006, we opened as a 5 room Bed and Breakfast. By September of that year we were 100% occupied and realized the community needed extended stay rooms-So Carl began building Villas 1-5 with kitchenettes to accommodate that need. Villa #3 became our first romantic suite with a Jacuzzi Tub. Villas 1, 2, 4, 5 have washers and dryers too.
Carl designed a beautiful outdoor sanctuary with a lovely waterfall for the purpose of hosting Easter Sunrise Service for the community which we host every year (2014 had record numbers of 310 attending) the sanctuary has become a beautiful outdoor venue for weddings and other events as well.
After hosting several weddings and events during our first year, in May of 2007 Carl built a wonderful banquet facility to host receptions and other events. My past hospitality experience has ensured wonderful meals to 1000’s over each year. We also host a very fun New Year’s Eve Party every year (Make your reservations early!) We love to have fun! Click here to watch our “First Dance” from our 10 year Anniversary in 2013. We are thankful and blessed for our additional part-time staff that helps us in our daily operations, banquets and our continued growth.
Son, Curtis rejoined Dream Manor Inn in 2008 and is an integral part of maintenance, construction and banquets to keep the Inn at top shape. He married a Globe native, Samantha Kivlehen in 2009 here at Dream Manor Inn.
In 2010, an additional 5 villas were added with a free laundry room. All of them have full kitchens for extended stays. Three are one bedroom, 1 bathroom apartments-the other two are 3 bedrooms and a 2 bedroom apartments. Found on our website as villas 6-10. They are located on a different level that has beautiful views of the Pinal Mountains and a courtyard with a Gazebo, and an observation tower.
With this addition, son Christopher joined the team. He assists with front desk duties, does maintenance and construction; he is our awesome grill man for banquets and working on taking over the banquet room kitchen. Also in 2010, I had to “quit the day job” to focus on more of the daily operations of Dream Manor Inn.
In 2011-2012, Carl remodeled our basement into a “Man Cave” featuring a pool table, exercise room, foosball, ping pong table and more. This has become a hit for not only our guests, but also the groom and his groomsmen as they are getting ready for their wedding. Our entrance, staircase, and living room were remodeled as well. Son, David joined the team to assist with banquets, daily operations and housekeeping.
2013-we filled in the old 1968 pool, built a beautiful courtyard with fountain, enclosed the patio area with a new breakfast/hospitality room-took down the carport we built in 2005 and replaced it with 3 additional rooms (2 studio apartments with kitchens and a handicap accessible room-all with king size beds). We added an additional guest laundry and vending machine. The avid golf enthusiast, Carl also added a putting green available to guests-and a chipping green for guests with handicaps in the single digits.
In 2014, even more changes occurred. Our beautiful new pool/spa areas are open. This includes a pool clubhouse which will also serve as a “bridal get ready room”. For our guests enjoyment, we added a massage room-to pre-book a massage on property contact us at 928.425.2754. Our new Hilltop Suite which is above the club house is our new romantic suite.
Jon and Holley 1st Dance Proud Parents of the Groom (us!)
In 2015, we saw another family wedding coming up with son Jon Dunn marrying local girl Holley Lamont-whose family owns Lamont Mortuary here in Globe. Carl wanted to make the banquet room more spacious so to accommodate the many guests we knew would be coming to the wedding. He enclosed the back patio space, put a built in bar, stage and DJ booth with new sound and lighting systems and created a lovely dance floor area. We were able to easily accommodate the 160 guests for their beautiful October wedding. We recently were able to host a “Hats Off to Domestic Violence” fundraiser with 175 guests.
Along with each phase of construction, Carl continues to create little sitting areas to relax and enjoy the scenery and surroundings. Dream Manor Inn started as a 5 room B&B, added more rooms and the banquet room to become an Inn and now has become Globe’s first Boutique Resort with its newest amenities. We are thankful and grateful for our dedicated staff. We are humbled and pleased that Dream Manor Inn has become Globe’s premier choice in accommodations, weddings and events.
